Ph.D. Student and Post-Doc Openings at RPI LEIA Lab
The Language-Endowed Intelligent Agents (LEIA) Lab at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, NY, USA is looking for new Ph.D. students and post-doctoral associates.
Language-endowed social intelligent agents are knowledge-based, explanatory, computational models of human cognitive functioning in teams that include both people and agents, for example, robots.
In particular, we develop theories and implement computer systems for:
• the semantic and pragmatic interpretation of language in human-computer dialog;
• goal- and plan-based reasoning;
• the integration of language understanding with reasoning and decision-making;
• the way agents model their beliefs about other agents; and
• acquisition and maintenance of knowledge resources, such as ontologies and lexicons.
We are interested in emulating overall human reasoning and behavior rather than developing specialized technologies for particular tasks (such as text mining or playing chess). For example, one of our latest systems simulated a patient interacting with a doctor during an office visit.
For Ph.D. studentships, we are looking for candidates holding Bachelors or Masters degrees in computer science or related fields, with excellent programming skills and mature interest in modeling human language and/or reasoning. Excellent knowledge of English is a must. The candidates may choose to apply to the Ph.D. program either in the Cognitive Science or the Computer Science Department at RPI. Postdoctoral associate candidates must hold a recent Ph.D. or equivalent degree in computer science or related fields.
The LEIA lab will support the successful candidate(s) by covering the Ph.D. students’ tuition costs and providing them with the standard RPI Ph.D. student stipend. Post-docs will receive a salary commensurate with their track record and abilities.
E-mail your expressions of interest and all inquiries, preferably enclosing a CV and a cover letter to Dr. Sergei Nirenburg (zavedomo@gmail.com). Professor Nirenburg will be visiting Kharkov on May 17-25 and will invite promising candidates to a meeting to be held during that period at a location that will be announced in due course.
